Sweelinck, Jan Pieterszoon

(?May 1562, Deventer, the Netherlands – 16 October 1621, Amsterdam)
He lived almost his entire life in Amsterdam and was organist at the Oude Kerk certainly from 1580 (possibly earlier) until his death. Famous as a teacher, his students included Samuel Scheidt, Heinrich Scheidemann (c. 1595–1663), and many others who formed the so-called north German organ school. He composed 39 motets and 153 psalms, but Sweelinck is chiefly known for his 32 fantasias and toccatas and 12 chorale settings for keyboard.
